Mediterranean Sustainable Finance Observatory

Mediterranean Sustainable Finance Observatory

Supporting Green and Sustainable Business Through Coordinated Action

A regional platform strengthening sustainable finance across the Mediterranean.

The Mediterranean region is facing increasing systemic risks driven by environmental pressures, climate change, and growing social vulnerabilities. These interconnected challenges threaten economic stability and social cohesion across both the Northern and Southern shores of the region.

Coordinated and long-term action is essential to ensure sustainable development and secure a resilient future for the Mediterranean.

The Observatory connects financial actors, policymakers, international organisations, businesses and experts across the Northern and Southern Mediterranean to exchange knowledge, strengthen cooperation and support sustainable finance.

Its geographical scope includes both the Northern and Southern Mediterranean, facilitating the exchange of information, experience and good practices across the region.

The Observatory focuses on sustainable finance while considering the wider economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.

Why Sustainable Finance Matters

Access to sustainable finance is a key enabler of fair and inclusive development. Financial resources must be
deployed in ways that integrate:

Despite its strategic importance, progress in aligning finance with sustainability goals in the Mediterranean has remained limited. Greater cooperation among financial actors, policymakers, and ecosystem stakeholders is key to accelerate change.

The Role of the Observatory

The Mediterranean Sustainable Finance Observatory aims to:

  • Foster structured exchange of information among Mediterranean countries.
  • Map and connect sustainable finance actors across the region.
  • Promote a rigorous and shared model for sustainable financial practices
  • Strengthen cooperation between Northern and Southern Mediterranean stakeholders

Because the countries of the Mediterranean share the same sea and interconnected futures, balanced representation from both shores is essential to ensure legitimacy, inclusiveness, and effectiveness.
